Who We Are
A Brief History of Ozark Christian Church Print E-mail

The Christian Church in the United States was founded in the beginning years of the 19th century by Alexander and Thomas Campbell and Barton W. Stone in the frontier area of western Pennsylvania and eastern Kentucky.

The Christian Church in Ozark, Missouri was founded on May 5, 1840 with the following charter members: John R. Weaver, Joseph L. Weaver, A. C. Chapman, Mrs. A. R. Lawing, Susan Fielder, Mary Kinemore, Joel Hayden and Jessie Wilks.  The church has been in existence 152 years as of this date and is believed to be one of the oldest Christian churches in this area.

The original site of the church is unknown, but is believed to be somewhat north of the present site of Elm and 3rd Avenue, because the old town of Ozark was built along the bluff of the Finley River.  Ozark in the early days, was a part of Greene County.  Christian County was not formed until 1859.

The life of the church was disrupted during the Civil War and all of the records were destroyed.  It is thought that this happened at the time of the Battle of Wilson Creek.

The record indicates that the church was reorganized September 10, 1864, with 23 members including the charter members.  John R> Weaver was ordained as an elder and served as ordained elder until his detach in 1899.  Joseph L. Weaver was ordained a deacon at the time John R. Weaver was ordained an elder.

The church has grown from the original members of 8 to a present membership of 161, as of July 1, 1992.  The church is a Cooperative Church and is officially called the OZARK CHRISTIAN CHURCH (Disciples of Christ).

The present building was built in 1912 and the educational building and fellowship hall was added and officially dedicated on May 15, 1960.

This is our heritage and our history.  The further is yours and ours.  Let us make the most of it.
